"A SPOTLIGHT ON MADNESS" (2023)

A Spotlight on Madness was featured in the 2023 edition of the exhibition Störende Wahrheiten in Lorentzweiler, Luxembourg. This piece served as a critical exploration of materialism, consumer culture, and the societal obsession with appearance. In this installation, Pierrard presents a Louis Vuitton handbag—acquired specifically for the project—displayed in front of the chapel in Bofferdange. By juxtaposing a luxury consumer item with a religious setting, the artist prompts viewers to reflect on what is considered sacred in contemporary society. The handbag symbolizes the irrationality of modern consumption, where the illusion of status and identity through branded goods overshadows genuine personal fulfillment. Pierrard critiques how such objects, often produced at a fraction of their selling price, are imbued with symbolic value that caters to narcissistic vanity and societal greed, yet fail to deliver true satisfaction. He describes the handbag as a "Pandora’s bag," encapsulating politically correct and socially accepted sins like spiritual laziness and the repression of authentic desires.

The theoretical framework of the artwork draws inspiration from Guy Debord’s 1967 essay The Society of the Spectacle, which analyzes how capitalist societies commodify experiences and emotions, turning even dissatisfaction into marketable goods. Pierrard aligns with Debord’s perspective by highlighting the dominance of spectacle over substance in modern life, where the appearance of happiness and success often masks underlying emptiness and alienation.
