Pussy Riot is a Russian feminist punk-rock group based in Moscow. Founded in August 2011, the band stages unannounced provocative performances about Russian political life in unusual and unauthorized locations.

Growing ties between church and state in Russia have been a target of criticism and protest. On March 3, three of the group members were arrested and charged with hooliganism. All three were convicted and sentenced to two years in a penal colony on August 17, 2012.
